This technique is also called "Allergy Cure: Counter Example" or just "Counter Example" - Explain Immune System Mistake
"Allergy is like a phobic reaction by the immune system - an inappropriate and overwhelming response to a harmless substance. The immune system has made a mistake and identified a harmless substance as being dangerous when it really isn't and the allergic response is an inappropriate reaction by the immune system. The immune system can learn and retrain very quickly."
- Calibrate To Allergic Reaction
"So for the purpose of testing, what is it like for you right now, to be in the close presence of the (allergen)? Imagine that the (allergen) is here right now."
Watch & calibrate to the person's- physiology
- eye-accessing cues
- breathing
- Check for Ecology/Secondary Gains
What would life be like without the allergy? What positive or negative consequences?
Use whatever NLP techniques to resolve any issues that arise before proceeding.
- Counter-Example
Whenever possible, let the person come up with an appropriate counter example that is as close as possible to the allergen and to which the person's immune system responds to appropriately.
"What is like (the allergen) that you can be around and to which your body hasn't made a mistake about?"
You can make suggestions as to possible counter examples if none are forthcoming. See: Allergen: Counter Examples
- Associate & Then Anchor Ensure that the person is fully associated:
"Go back in the past and be totally there with (the counter example). Have your immune system pay special attention to how it responds when you are in the presence of (the counter example). Let your immune system pay particular attention to how precisely it does this for you."
Anchor the response and hold throughout the process.
- Disassociate and Observe Immune System's Appropriate Response
Disassociate the person (e.g. wall-to-wall plexiglass shield). Keep holding the anchor. Have the person watch himself on the other side of the plexiglass. Start the images with the counter example and then have it slowly transform to the former allergen while his immune system continues to respond appropriately.
"Watch the other you responding appropriately and have your immune system be very sensitive in noting how it does this for you so that it is able to respond appropriately to a harmless substance. And VERY SLOWLY AND ONLY AS FAST AS YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM CAN LEARN, replace the (counter example) with the allergen .. the thing that used to create this problem."
Keep holding the anchor and WAIT UNTIL THERE IS A PHYSIOLOGICAL SHIFT.
- Integrate & Test
While still holding the anchor, ask the person to gather in the other "(their name)" - the one whose immune system knows how to respond appropriately in the presence of that which used to cause him mistakenly to have an allergic reaction - and take that other person into himself in whatever way that is right. Then, being back here with you, ask him to imagine himself in the presence of what used to cause his immune system to react inappropriately.
Remind him that his immune system now has the resources and has learnt how to respond appropriately.
- Future Pace
Have the person imagine a time in the future when she will be in the presence of the thing that used to cause an allergic reaction in him. Ask him immune system to pay special attention to how it now knows how to respond appropriately. Give time for person to readjust to changes. Re-calibrate to the non-verbal shifts.
(You can ask the person to thank his immune system for being so responsive to learning new ways so effectively.)
- Actual Test if Possible
Do an actual behavioural test if possible by introducing the former allergen
